The name Free State Stadium is the official name to be used during the 2010 FIFA World Cup chosen as a demonstration of a Free State based approach towards 2010 preparations.
The stadium is located within a sports complex comprising of cricket, hockey and athletics fields. It is scheduled to undergo minor upgrades based on the technical evaluation of the SA Bid Book by FIFA to comply with the requirements of the world football organizing body. The levels of upgrades include the increase in the following:
Capacity:The original capacity of the stadium is at about 38 000 seats including the VIP seats which is being increased to 45 000 seating capacity.
The following information briefly indicates the scope of the stadium’s refurbishment:
•Adding 2nd tier on the western pavilion to increase stadium capacity to 40 000 saleable seats,excluding VIP seats and Media facility. The modification will require removal of existing roof and construction of new upper tier.
• Media seating for written press, radio and telecommunication
• Media center behind the western pavilion, which will be converted to new indoor multi purpose facility.
• Venue operating center for Security and CCTV
• Provision of security perimeters (including 16 cameras for CCTV)
• Floodlights upgrading to increase illuminaire to the required 1500 lux
• Upgrading of public address sound system
• New turnstiles installed for improved controlled flow of
spectators
• Changes to existing Hockey
